Rain Barrel Frequently Asked Questions

Can I paint the barrel?

Yes, the barrels can be painted, but you must use paint made for plastic.

Do I have to personally be there to pay or to pick up the barrel?

You may send another person in your place to pay or to pick up your barrel. When the order is placed, the person must be able to provide your name, address, telephone number and email address. At pick up, the person must have the copy of your order form and receipt.

How can I use water from my rain barrel?

Water from a rain barrel can be used for any non-potable water use.

  • Watering lawns and gardens.
  • Wash tools, cars and pets.
  • Keeping compost bins moist.

Where should I place my rain barrel?

The rain barrel can attach to any downspout on a house, garage or shed.  The barrel will overflow once full, therefore it is best to place it away from building foundations.  Rain barrels should ultimately be placed in a convenient location near its intended use.  Rain barrels are ideal when placed near flower beds or gardens that might be out of reach of a garden hose.

Will the barrel attract mosquitoes?

The barrels provided in the City of Peoria’s program have a filter screen that blocks debris and prevents mosquitoes from breeding. If you believe your barrel is breeding mosquitoes, drain it completely to kill the larvae.

Will the barrel fit in my car?

The barrels are made from recycled food shipping containers, so each one is a little different. Some may be taller and thinner and others are shorter and wider, but they are all around 55 gallons. The barrels are approximately 21 inches in diameter and around 34 inches in height. The barrels fit in the backseat of a car, but will not fit in the trunk unless the vehicle is a hatchback. Of course, the barrels fit fine in SUVs and trucks.
