Since the effort to revitalize neighborhood watch in Peoria began in 2006, over 50 neighborhood watch groups have been established. The successful revitalization of neighborhood watch is due to the enthusiastic response from residents who want to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. The revitalization has been sustained through collaboration between residents, the Police Department, the Community Development Division, and Public Works.
The path to becoming an established neighborhood watch in Peoria typically begins with a small step by a resident who calls the City to inquire about how to address or prevent nuisance, blight and crime. After receiving an application, the resident and a partner go door to door to enlist the support of their neighbors. After the application has been completed, a “kick off” is held in a front yard, on a driveway, or other outdoor neighborhood meeting place. The kick off is a 30-minute ceremony to recognize the successful completion of the neighborhood watch application process. A City Council representative, police officers, and City staff, also participate. Neighborhood Watch handbooks and stickers are distributed, and the event concludes after the presentation of a neighborhood watch certificate. Prior to the kick off, Public Works will post neighborhood watch signs near the boundary of the watch area. (A picture of the sign is posted at the top of this page.)
Neighborhood Watch organizers understand that getting to know their neighbors builds trust and confidence, which strengthens the collaboration necessary to confront suspicious persons, and to report nuisance, blight and crime.
