Be a Good Neighbor

Be a Good Neighbor

The Code Enforcement Division is committed to monitoring neighborhoods plagued by blight and taking the necessary steps to uphold the City's housing and environmental standards.  As a citizen of Peoria, you can help keep the neighbors safe and clean by doing your part and being a good neighbor.  Keeping Peoria's neighborhood's clean and healthy is something the Division takes very serious and we offer a few tips on being a good neighbor.  Click here to download brochure.

Garbage Collection

  • Do NOT use plastic bags for garbage disposal.  Bags can be torn open by rats, raccoons or dogs.
  • Use metal or plastic cans with handles and tight-fitting lids.  (maximum:32-gallon size cans weighing less than 50 lbs each)
  • Do NOT set trash out before 3:00 pm the day prior to pick-up.  Remember to retrieve cans within 24 hours after trash pick-up.
  • Cans should be placed within 3 feet of the curb or alley line.

Weeds

The City code define weeds as "Weeds means all noxious vegetation and all grasses, annual plants and vegetation other than trees or shrubs which exceed a height or length of ten inches; provided, however, this term shall not include cultivated flowers and gardens."  Grass and weeds must not exceed ten inches in height.  Fines may be issued or grass/weed may be cut at the owners expense.  Part of being a good neighbor is keeping your lawn cut and maintained.

Housing Exterior

The City code says that all exterior surfaces, including but not limited to, doors, door frames, window frames, cornices, porches, trim, balconies, decks, and fences should be maintained in good condition. Peeling, flaking, and chipped paint shall be eliminated and surfaces repainted. Buildings with deteriorated paint, damaged siding, or siding that is not water tight are a blighting influence on the neighborhood. Being a good neighbor means taking caring of your structure and not allowing the paint to peel or the siding to remain damaged. The city of Peoria offers a program to provide paint for income eligible residents. For more information please contact our office.
