Mayor Jim Ardis

May 2005 - Current

Mayor Ardis

Welcome to the Mayor’s Website:

As of May 2009, it has been my distinct privilege to serve 10 years on the Peoria City Council. From 1999, to 2005, I served as Councilman At Large, and I am now in my second term as Mayor. Public service is a noble calling. I am honored the voters have again entrusted me with this office.

Peoria is the urban hub of an exciting and beautiful region. We are blessed with an abundance of qualified and skilled human resources and rich natural assets. We take our local governance responsibility seriously, especially when considering that over one-third of the region’s population resides here. When the 2010 census is completed, we anticipate our population to be 114,000 citizens.

Similar to the rest of the nation, we have our challenges largely brought about by the slowdown in the economy. What sets us apart, however, is that we are positioned to quickly take advantage of the economic rebound.

One only has to note that Peoria is fortunate to have robust and strong private and non-profit sectors. We are home to Caterpillar, Inc., a leading player in shaping the global economy. This great company is poised to adjust rapidly to greater demand for its products and services. Our non-profit community is led by continued expansion of world class health services and higher educational institutions. These employers compete with the very best in the nation.

Our greatest strength is in our people and the priority they place on educational access and achievement. Peoria is the home of prestigious Bradley University, as well as Illinois Central College, Midstate College, and Robert Morris College. I am proud to be able to play a supporting role in Peoria Promise…our effort to provide a free college education for students who live and attend school in Peoria’s District 150 schools. This program is helping over 300 young men and women pursue their educational objectives.

Peoria is a great value for our residents. Our tax rate has been stable for two decades. Where else could you ‘purchase’ effective and efficient life safety services, infrastructure maintenance and renovation, neighborhood stabilization, economic development, and planned land use and growth for just 11 cents on the dollar?

Thank you for visiting our Website. I now encourage you to take advantage of the real thing!
